Este domingo 30 de noviembre es el Primer Domingo de Adviento. Durante esta temporada santa, se nos invita a comenzar el nuevo año eclesiástico con los ojos bien abiertos. Esperamos la Bendita Esperanza, Jesucristo, el Mesías tan anhelado, que vino a la Tierra por primera vez hace 2,000 años y nació de la Virgen María. Está presente entre nosotros ahora, especialmente en la Eucaristía, y volverá con gloria al final de los tiempos.

This Sunday, Nov. 30, is the first Sunday of Advent. During this holy season, we are invited to begin the new Church year with eyes wide open. We are waiting for the Blessed Hope, Jesus Christ, the long-awaited Messiah, who first came to Earth 2,000 years ago and was born of the Virgin Mary. He is present among us now, especially in the Eucharist, and he will come again in glory at the end of time.

Ya conocen cuál fue la generosidad de nuestro Señor Jesucristo: siendo rico como era, se hizo pobre por ustedes para enriquecerlos con su pobreza. (2 Cor 8:9)

You know well the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. (2 Cor 8:9)

El domingo 9 de noviembre se interrumpe el calendario litúrgico de la Iglesia. En lugar de observar el XXXII domingo del tiempo ordinario, la Iglesia nos invita a celebrar la Festividad de la Dedicación de la Basílica de Letrán, la catedral de la diócesis de Roma.

On Sunday, Nov. 9, the Church’s liturgical schedule is interrupted. Instead of observing the Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Church invites us to celebrate the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome.

Mañana, 18 de octubre, es la festividad de san Lucas el Evangelista, autor de uno de los cuatro Evangelios y de los Hechos de los Apóstoles. Se lo venera por su capacidad para mostrarnos las enseñanzas, las curaciones y los milagros de Jesús—que culminan con su pasión, muerte, resurrección y ascensión al cielo—y por ayudarnos a visualizar la vida de los primeros cristianos.

Tomorrow, Oct. 18, is the feast of St. Luke the Evangelist. Luke is the author of one of the four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. He is revered for his ability to show us the teaching, healing and miracles of Jesus (culminating in his passion, death, resurrection and ascension into heaven) and for helping us to visualize the life of the very first Christians.

La doctrina social católica se basa en el principio de que toda vida es sagrada ya que cada ser humano—hecho a imagen y semejanza de Dios—es único e irreemplazable, y es nuestra solemne responsabilidad, como individuos y como sociedad, proteger y defender toda vida humana desde la concepción hasta la muerte natural.

Catholic social teaching is founded on the principle that all life is sacred. Every human being, made in the image and likeness of God, is unique and irreplaceable, and it is our solemn responsibility, as individuals and as a society, to protect and defend all human life from conception until natural death.

La Iglesia no solamente tiene el compromiso de proteger el medioambiente sino que, por encima de todo, procura proteger a la humanidad contra la autodestrucción. Al respetar y cuidar de todos los seres, ampliamos nuestra capacidad de respetar y cuidar el obsequio de la creación divina.

The Church is not only committed to protecting the environment, but above all we seek to protect humankind from self-destruction. By respecting and caring for all things, we grow in our ability to respect and care for God’s gift of creation!
